Okla. to Put Anti-Abortion Signs in Public Bathrooms

Oklahoma lawmakers and the State Department of Health are considering putting signs inside bathrooms that would discourage women from getting abortions and direct them to pro-life alternatives, KWTV-TV reports.

The Associated Press said that the move, which would cost $2.3 million, is being considered to reduce the number of abortions in the Sooner State.

The provision that would enable the signs to be posted in any public bathroom under the purview of the Department of Health was included in a bill the legislature passed last year. It aims to inform Oklahomans about abortion and its alternatives “for the purpose of achieving an abortion-free society.”

The signs would read: “There are many public and private agencies willing and able to help you carry your child to term and assist you and your child after your child is born, whether you choose to keep your child or to place him or her for adoption. The State of Oklahoma strongly urges you to contact them if you are pregnant.”

They would also feature a link to the Health Department’s website for further information.

AP reported that “signage requirements apply to public restrooms of any entity that is regulated by the agency, including hospitals, hotels and motels, nursing homes, residential care facilities and most public schools.”

Some critics, however, have said that this might be overreach by the state government.

“We don’t have any concern about the information they’re trying to get out to women about their babies and their pregnancy. This is just the wrong way to do it,” Jim Hooper, president of the Oklahoma Restaurant Association, said. “It’s just another mandate on small businesses. It’s not just restaurants. It includes hospitals, nursing homes. It just doesn’t make sense.”

“I do see how it is going to need to be tempered a tad,” said state Sen. A.J. Griffin, a Republican who sponsored the bill. “We need to make sure we have something that’s reasonable and still effective.”

Oklahoma’s bill is one of the most innovative pro-life pushes we’ve seen in a while. Moreover, the fact that liberals are bound to get angry over something that merely gives Oklahomans information proves that they don’t just want abortion to be “safe, legal and rare.”

We’ll keep you updated on how this develops.
