Conservative media outlets have for years claimed that President Barack Obama loathes America’s gun rights, and what he himself said during a documentary that aired Sunday seemed to confirm this suspicion.
“If you ask me where has been the one area where I feel that I’ve been most frustrated and most stymied, it is the fact that the United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which we do not have sufficient common sense gun safety laws,” he said in the CNN documentary entitled, “The Legacy of Barack Obama.”
The argument could be made that what the president referred to as “common sense gun safety laws” were in reality draconian rules and regulations that would have drastically undermined the Second Amendment.
Moreover, he has previously made references to Australia, where in the 1990s legislators banned certain semi-automatic, self-loading rifles and shotguns; implemented nationwide registration for gun ownership; and imposed a 28-day waiting period on weapon purchases.
“A couple of decades ago, Australia had a mass shooting, similar to Columbine or Newtown, and Australia just said, ‘Well, that’s it, we’re not seeing that again,’” Obama said at a Tumblr-hosted Q&A event two years ago, according to a White House transcript. “And basically imposed very severe, tough gun laws. And they haven’t had a mass shooting since.”
As noted commentator Charles Krauthammer suggested in National Review last year, it has always felt like Obama believed in Australian-style confiscation but simply refused to admit as much for obvious reasons.
“There’s a reason he didn’t bring up confiscation (apart from the debate about its actual efficacy in reducing gun violence in Australia),” Krauthammer wrote. “In this country, with its traditions, public sentiment, and — most importantly — Second Amendment, them’s fightin’ words.”
So instead Obama has spent his presidency pursuing confiscatory-like policies — overreaching background checks, executive regulatory changes, etc. — that would have done nothing to curb gun violence in America but plenty to weaken gun rights.
And judging by what he told CNN, he would have implemented far more policies of such a nature had he had the chance. But thanks to Republicans, he never did.
