Obama Refers To Himself 75 Times During Chicago Farewell Address

Even as he leaves office, there’s one thing that presses most on President Barack Obama’s mind, and that’s how you perceive Barack Obama.

While the man who will replace Obama, President-elect Donald Trump, is often portrayed as an egomaniac by the national press, Obama’s obsession with himself has long proved how true love doesn’t necessarily require a second person. He proved that again on Tuesday when he delivered his exit speech in the city of Chicago.

According to The Daily Caller, an analysis of the speech showed that the president referred to himself no less than 75 times in a little under an hour.

In the speech, the president used the pronoun “I” 33 times, “my” another 20 times, “me” 10 times, and “I’m” or “I’ve” a further 12 times.

Yet, in a blog post previewing the farewell address, the president said it was all about you, the American people.

“Since 2009, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges, and come through them stronger. That’s because we have never let go of a belief that has guided us ever since our founding — our conviction that, together, we can change this country for the better,” Obama said. “Because, for me, it’s always been about you.”

In his blog post, President Obama pointed out that, “In 1796, as George Washington set the precedent for a peaceful, democratic transfer of power, he also set a precedent by penning a farewell address to the American people. And over the 220 years since, many American presidents have followed his lead.”

However, few presidents have used it as much for the purposes of an undeserved victory lap quite as much as the outgoing president did. CNN reported that Obama, at one point, told the crowd, “Yes, we can. Yes, we did. Yes, we can.”

When he wasn’t taking credit for what he hadn’t done, he was blaming others for what had happened at the ballot box back in November.

“It’s not just dishonest, this selective sorting of the facts; it’s self-defeating,” the president said. “Because as my mom used to tell me, reality has a way of catching up with you.” (And no, I know what you’re thinking, and I do not believe he got the irony.)

But then, what are you to expect? This is someone who went to speak at a memorial service for the five police officers slain in Dallas and made it all about himself, mentioning all he had done no less than 45 times. In fact, I’m halfway surprised that the president hasn’t turned into an illeist, referring to himself in the third person the same way that Ricky Henderson used to.

But, hey, there’s always retirement for that.
