On Friday, President Barack Obama signed the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act into law. Buried within that act is a lesser-known provision that deserves our attention, as it aims to target “fake news” and “disinformation techniques.”
The Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act was introduced in May by Republican Sen. Rob Portman and Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy, the Independent Journal Review reported.
The Propaganda Act had two main goals, according to a news release on Portman’s Senate website.
It established the Global Engagement Center under the State Department, which will organize efforts to recognize, expose and counter foreign state and non-state disinformation efforts aimed at undermining United States’ national security interests.
The law also authorized grants to non-governmental agencies to help collect and store examples of print, broadcast, online and social media disinformation, misinformation and propaganda directed at the U.S.
Such a law could be used to take on whatever the government determines to be “fake news,” which could include websites like Conservative Tribune.
This kind of law is bad for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.
Zero Hedge reported that it’s a problem when mainstream media outlets like The Washington Post have already begun priming the general public to equate “Russian Propaganda” with “fake news” (despite admitting after the fact that their own report was essentially fake).
To add to the problem, liberal news outlets have also “indoctrinated the public to assume that any information which is not in compliance with the official government narrative, or dares to criticize the establishment, is also ‘fake news’ and thus falls under the ‘Russian propaganda’ umbrella.”
The scene is now set for the US government to legally crack down on every media outlet that the government deems to be “foreign propaganda,” Zero Hedge concluded.
It’s hard not to agree with them on this.
