Harvard Law School announced a series of paid fellowships for research on issues dealing with Islamic law for its 2017-2018 academic year, with an aim to influence U.S. policy and dialogue regarding Shariah law.
Breitbart reported that the director of Harvard’s Islamic Legal Studies Program, Intisar Rabb, said the program came “just in time” for President-elect Trump’s administration and has the goal of “building a community of Islamic law scholars in the academy” as well as informing “policy and media discourse about Islamic law.”
Stipends of up to $5,000 per month will be available for students who are expected to contribute to policy papers “at the intersection of Islamic law and relevant issues of U.S. policy.”
The program will address “all areas of the law that relate to social change in the Muslim world, with a particular focus on human rights, women’s rights, children’s rights, the treatment of minorities, animal rights and constitutional law,” according to Harvard’s website.
President Barack Obama is a Harvard Law graduate, and it’s interesting to note that many of these issues are similar to his agenda. Knowing that, it’s hard to believe this program is a coincidence.
The fact that Harvard is offering these fellowships is curious. Islamic law offers no freedom of speech, religion or press. Under Shariah law, women and homosexuals are routinely tortured, or worse. We would hardly expect liberal Harvard University to agree with those practices.
It will be interesting to see how liberals respond to actual scholarship in the area of Islamic law — if actual scholarship is allowed under this program.
