When Barack Obama was elected president back in 2008, he arguably became the world’s biggest celebrity. People all over the world would climb over one another to get just a glimpse of the United States’ charismatic leader.

Eight years later, President Obama is on one of his final trips abroad. In Greece, the people there were climbing over something different to “greet” Obama — police barriers.

According to RT, over 5,000 people in the Greek capital of Athens rioted in the streets because of Obama’s arrival in the debt-cursed European nation.

Greek journalist Aris Chatzistefanou says that the riots sprang in part from Obama’s inability to tackle “Islamic extremists” and the Greek debt crisis.

“While the Greek government is trying to present the visit of Obama as a visit of a peacemaker, thousands of demonstrators came onto the streets to protest US policy in parts of the world from Latin America to Middle East, Afghanistan and Syria,” Chatzistefanou told RT.

We could have done without the burning of an American flag:

“The government was trying to present to the Greek public that Barack Obama will come and help with the austerity policy that was imposed by the Troika (the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund).”

Al Jazeera identified the protesters as “anarchists” and reported they hurled Molotov cocktails and rocks at police trying to take control of the situation.

“A march by PAME (the communist party labor union) ended peacefully. A second march pushed up against a police cordon and protesters threw two Molotov cocktails,” an Athens police spokesman said. “That’s when the clashes began.”

The protests weren’t limited to Athens, either. Another 1,000 protesters gathered in Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki.

This is what Obama’s presidency has disintegrated into. Once a celebrity, President Obama is now greeted with strife, frustration and bitterness. The people of Greece are no longer thanking Obama for “taking us back from the brink,” as the left likes to say. It’s all crumbled in the most predictable of ways.

Now, Donald Trump stands poised to wipe Obama’s legacy off the books. For the people of the world, that can’t come soon enough.
