A new report from NBC News claimed that President Barack Obama mostly ignored hacking from Russia because he thought that Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton was going to win the presidential election and that it wouldn’t be worth it to have a showdown with Russia over the alleged hacking that led to the DNC document leaks.

While Obama did have a showdown with Putin over the hacking at the G-20 summit in China in September, the report stated, he did not make it a major priority, one source familiar with the hacking said.

“They thought she was going to win, so they were willing to kick the can down the road,” the source told NBC News.

Liberals have now begun questioning the way the Obama administration handled the hacking.

“I think it is a legitimate question and I think given the stakes at the national level the question deserves an answer,” retired Adm. James Stavridis, who was mentioned as a possible running mate for Hillary Clinton, told NBC News when asked about the Obama administration’s response. “In retrospect it certainly seems as though it was a mistake not to call the Russians sooner and respond to them in a very forceful way.”

Now, of course, Obama’s talking very tough on the matter.

“I think there is no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact the integrity of our elections … we need to take action,” Obama told NPR during an interview this week. “And we will — at a time and place of our own choosing. Some of it may be explicit and publicized; some of it may not be.”

However, Obama has a history of underestimating Putin’s Russia. During one of the 2012 debates, as The Daily Caller pointed out, Obama chided opponent Mitt Romney for saying that Russia was America’s “number one geopolitical foe.”

“The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years,” Obama famously quipped then.

Whoops.

Now, of course, the president is blaming the Kremlin for Hillary Clinton’s loss. Even though this recent focus on Russia is exaggerated, to whatever extent they affected our elections, they were able to do so solely because of the fact that Obama’s laxity on Russia — up until it was too late — let them do whatever it is that they did.
