During a meeting last week with liberal advocacy group Organizing for Action, President Barack Obama hinted that his career in politics might not be over just yet.
It seems that the election of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as president has inspired Obama to consider a future in politics after the White House. The New York Times reported that Obama hinted to friends and supporters that he wanted to add his voice among crushed Democrats and activists who are angry over Trump’s win.
White House aides said they expected Obama try to restrain himself from criticizing Trump during the transition, but he has made it clear that once he is out of office he will not remain silent if Trump goes too far while trying to undo Obama’s so-called legacy.
“I’m going to be constrained in what I do with all of you until I am again a private citizen,” Obama told Organizing for Action. “But that’s not so far off.”
“As an American citizen who cares deeply about our country, if there are issues that have less to do with the specifics of some legislative proposal or battle, but go to core questions about our values and ideals, and if I think it’s necessary or helpful for me to defend those ideals, then I’ll examine it when it comes,” Obama said to a crowd in Lima, Peru, on Sunday, reported NewsMax.
Obama also hinted that involvement the grassroots level could help Democrats get back on track, reported Politico.
Liberal advocacy groups have encouraged Obama to break from tradition and oppose Trump when needed — something they believe would happen often, reported NewsMax.
Obama would be close should he ever decide to criticize Trump. NewsMax reported that he will be staying in Washington at least until his daughter Sasha finishes high school.
The prospect of Obama getting back into the activist fray shouldn’t surprise anyone. Obama has always behaved with a sense of moral superiority, and there’s little doubt that he would voice opposition to Trump at any given moment given the chance.
