President Donald Trump is preparing to sign an extensive executive order to diminish the role that climate change plays in government policy.
Bloomberg News reported that a source “familiar with the administration’s plan” said the order, which targeted many of former President Barack Obama’s environmental policies, could be signed this week.
The order looks to reverse Obama’s broad approach to dealing with climate change.
One of the policies targeted is Obama’s “social cost of carbon” metric, which supposedly reflected the potential economic damage from climate change. The Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies used the metric to justify dozens of environmental regulations.
The order would also undo the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan and repeal regulations that limited oil industry emissions of methane.
Tom Pyle, president of the industry lobbying group American Energy Alliance, looked forward to Trump’s initiatives.
“President Obama created such a labyrinth of rules and orders and regulations to cement his agenda across practically every agency,” Pyle told Bloomberg. “It was designed to put into the mission of the agencies climate change first and make the rest of their mission second.
“This was a constraint deliberately set up by the previous administration to make it difficult to utilize coal, oil and natural gas,” he added.
Scott Pruitt, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, indicated earlier this year that some of Obama’s complex regulations would be simplified, and those changes have already started happening. Last week, he said that he wasn’t sure if carbon dioxide from human activity was the primary reason behind climate change.
This isn’t the first time Trump has taken a swing at some of Obama’s climate change policies. Earlier in the year, he overturned the “Stream Protection Rule.”
It looks like Trump is continuing to keep his word when it comes to Obama’s overreaching environmental policies — something that will cause Democrats to blow a gasket.
