President Barack Obama held his final news conference Friday and finally accepted some responsibility for how things have turned out for the Democrat Party under his watch.
Obama responded to a question about whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election because of the hacked email accounts at the Democrat National Committee and of her campaign chairman, John Podesta.
After hemming and hawing about it, Obama admitted that he had failed the Democrat Party by not helping them build strong candidates for the future.
“It’s been something that I’ve been able to do, successfully, in my own campaigns,” Obama said, the Washington Examiner reported. “It is not something I’ve been able to transfer to candidates in midterms and sort of build a sustaining organization around.
“That’s something that I would have liked to have done more of, but it’s kind of hard to do when you’re dealing a whole bunch of issues here in the White House,” he continued, excusing himself even while taking some responsibility for his party’s recent electoral failures.
Obama said Democrats needed to make sure that they’re showing up in places where Democrat policies are needed. He also mentioned that Democrats are often perceived as liberal, latte-sipping, politically correct, out-of-touch people, and that’s a serious detriment, The Washington Post reported.
Democrats did not just suffer in the general election — they have been decimated at state and local levels, too, and Obama is partially to blame for that. It’s difficult for people to rally behind someone who can’t lead, and Obama was never much of a leader.
It’s good to see the president admitting failure. It had to hurt to admit that with all his promises of hope and change, he is leaving his party worse off than it has been in quite some time.
