The New York Times hasn’t exactly hidden its disapproval of President Donald Trump, and has criticized him over the tiniest details, including his proposal to move the White House press briefings to a larger room.
During the first few weeks of Trump’s presidency, there has been so much media interest in covering the new administration that the 49 seats and standing area in the White House press room that were typically enough for President Barack Obama’s coverage with room to spare have not been enough for Trump’s media following — not by a long shot.
The Times, of course, was not happy about the suggested relocation, but a recent picture published by Gray Lady itself showed just how right Trump was about needing more space than his predecessor did.
In an article about how White House press secretary Sean Spicer has been breaking from tradition during media briefings, The Times included a picture of a jam-packed press briefing room.

The Times article also pointed out that the more traditional mainstream media outlets have enjoyed reserved seating in the first few rows, while more non-traditional organizations have been forced to cram into the standing-room-only area in the very back — if they’re allowed in the room at all.
This exact issue was one that Spicer cited as the Trump team considered moving the press briefings to a more accommodating space.
“A question is: Is a room that has 49 seats adequate? When we had that press conference the other day, we had thousands of requests, and we capped it at 400,” he told Esquire in January. “Is there an opportunity to potentially allow more members of the media to be part of this? That’s something we’re discussing.”
The Times, of course, framed the proposal as an attempt by the Trump administration to “berate and belittle the news media,” when in reality the White House was trying to include new faces in the media circus so Americans don’t have to rely solely on mainstream outlets that haven’t exactly been the epitome of reliability in recent months.
