NY Lawmakers Demand Trump Pay for His Own Security

President-elect Donald Trump has indicated that his family will maintain two residences during his presidency — the White House and Trump Tower — which has triggered criticism from some regarding the high costs of security.

Trump’s wife, Melania, and son, Barron, have planned to keep living at Trump Tower in Manhattan until at least next spring to allow the 10-year-old to finish the school year, and Trump has also indicated that he plans to travel to New York frequently, according to CNN.

In response, several Democrat members of the New York congressional delegation have demanded that if Trump follows through with these intentions he should help pay for some of the security costs.

Six Democrat representatives from various New York City boroughs sent a letter to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday arguing that the president-elect should help pick up the tab for some of the costs associated with having two residences, The Hill reported.

Reps. Nydia Velazquez, Grace Meng, Jerry Nadler, Yvette Clarke, Jose Serrano and Hakeem Jeffries complained that local funds were being used for Trump’s security costs instead of local public policy priorities like affordable housing or infrastructure.

Trump’s presence in New York City has reportedly cost the city more than $1 million per day, according to CNN, which includes security costs for his family.

The lawmakers argued that once Trump is inaugurated on Jan. 20, the city should refuse to pay any more security costs for Trump to keep two residences.

“To be clear: We understand the absolute importance of keeping the incoming first family safe. However, municipal or state resources should not be subsidizing the president-elect’s decision to maintain multiple permanent residences,” they wrote.

To cover the days leading up to Inauguration Day, Mayor de Blasio also announced on Monday that the city would be asking the U.S. government for up to $35 million to cover security costs for protecting Trump in his Manhattan home, according to Reuters.
