The fact that a painting depicting police as pigs is hanging in our nation’s Capitol is only the tip of the weirdness iceberg in this story.

A painting hanging in a House of Representatives building art exhibit featured a highly offensive scene that has sparked a partisan turf war, according to The New York Times. As of Friday morning, it was still on the wall, but it’s not alone.

A brave soul had also taped a “Blue Lives Matter” flag above the painting, where it stands as a not-so-subtle reminder that conservatives support cops and that disrespecting our law enforcement personnel is never OK. Period.

The painting depicts a confrontation between police officers, some rendered as pigs, and citizens in downtown St. Louis. The “artwork,” and we use that term generously, was sponsored by Rep. William Lacy Clay, as it was the winner from his district in a student art competition sponsored by Congress.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, a Republican, unilaterally made the decision to pull the work off the wall and return it to Clay’s office, according to The Washington Times.

Hunter, a Marine who served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, said, “I’ve seen the press (reporting) on this for about a week or so. I’m in the Marine Corps. If you want it done, just call us.”

Over the course of the next few days, Democrats put it back up, Republicans took it down again, and Democrats returned it to the wall.

After the painting was removed and re-hung as many as three times on Tuesday, Cedric Richmond, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, threatened violence.

“We may just have to kick somebody’s a**,” he told Politico.

Police associations called on House Speaker Paul Ryan to remove the painting, saying, “This false narrative portrays law enforcement professionals as posing a danger to the very communities we serve. That is untrue and this ‘art’ reinforces this false narrative and is disrespectful on so many levels,” according to Fox News.

Ryan has indicated that he will have the “artwork” removed — hopefully out with the rest of the trash.

Clay said the painting “perhaps” might violate the art contest’s rules (which ban politically sensitive issues), but it was the principle of the matter he worried about, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Don’t you love how liberals play the “principle card” when breaking the rules?
