The Swiss know how to deal with immigrants who refuse to assimilate, and the U.S. needs to take notice. This is how a government should react when dealing with immigrants who do not want to participate in the customs of their host country.
Back in June it was reported that Swiss authorities rejected the naturalization application of two Muslim girls, ages 12 and 14, who refused to take a school swimming class because male students would be learning alongside them.
The incident reportedly happened in the northern city of Basel, where the two girls had applied for citizenship several months prior. The girls, however, claimed that their religion prevented them from participating in “compulsory swimming lessons with males in the pool at the same time,” as reported by WTSP.
Shortly thereafter, their request for naturalization was denied.
“Whoever doesn’t fulfill these conditions violates the law and therefore cannot be naturalized,” Stefan Wehrle, president of the naturalization committee, reportedly told the SRF television station in the wake of the country’s decision.
It appears that denying citizenship because of failure to assimilate is a standard practice of the Swiss government.
As reported by the U.K. Independent, the Swiss government not only suspended a naturalization request from the father of two Muslim brothers who refused to shake hands with their female teacher, again because of religious restriction, it also quickly mandated that anyone who does not follow this common practice in Switzerland can now expect a $5,000 fine.
The Swiss have become the subject of media outrage because of their decisions, but their rules show that when an immigrant chooses to make a host country his home he must abide by the rules of that country.
There is something to be said for the bravery of the Swiss, who seem more than willing to stand up for what they believe is right. We could learn something from them.
