A transgender mother and son from Detroit have made worldwide headlines after both of them have chosen to live as father and daughter, the New York Post reported.
The transgender mother and son have also chronicled their adventures on Instagram, drawing both praise and criticism.
Corey Maison, 15, began the process by revealing to his parents that he identified as a girl four years ago.
“I wanted to make my parents proud of who I am, but I thought that they would not like me,” Corey said in an interview with the Australian “60 Minutes” program.
However, his mother Erica — who now identifies as Eric — revealed she was struggling with her gender identity a year ago.
“The first feeling was relief, the second was terror,” Maison said. “Fear for what my future would hold, fear for how my family and children would, fear for what the rest of my life was going to look like.”
Both individuals have begun the process of physically transitioning to the opposite sex. Erica, in particular, has undergone a double mastectomy. Her husband, Les, says he will stay with her as she transitions into being a male.
@Regrann from @natgeo – Sometimes our children lead the way. Corey, 14, socially transitioned from boy to girl in the past few years. She gave her Mom, Eric(a) the courage to begin her own transition from female to male. They are moving in opposite directions but toward their true selves. After her first shot of testosterone Erica said she finally felt “complete”. “I fell in love with the person. She was beautiful as a woman, but equally beautiful on the inside,” Les Maison said. “As long as Eric is happy with the appearance, Eric will be happy with what’s in her brain — or his brain.”
His wife isn’t looking back.
“The only regret I have is not being educated sooner about what transgenderism was, so I could do it sooner,” Erica Maison said.
Their pictures on Instagram have drawn a wide range of opinions of the family — from “very brave” to “(m)utilating their own bodies … (t)hese people need help, not acceptance.”
The case has gotten plenty of attention from the media, most of whom uncritically praise the family. However, one can bet that among the American people — most of whom believe the debate on trans individuals is a lot less settled than the media tends to portray — the response will be much more mixed.
