MLKs Niece Agrees with Trump John Lewis District Is in Bad Shape

Speaking Monday on Fox News, Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece Alveda King made a noteworthy admission, stating that she agreed with President-elect Donald Trump’s criticism of Georgia Rep. John Lewis.

“Atlanta actually does need help,” she said, referencing Trump’s assertion on Twitter last week that Lewis should focus his efforts on fixing his own community instead of questioning the legitimacy of the president-elect’s 2016 election victory.

“So I really agree with the president,” she added. “Let’s fix Atlanta. Let’s fix America.”

The beef between Trump and Lewis broke out late last week when the Georgia congressman expressed his belief that Trump was an illegitimate president.

“I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president,” he said Friday on NBC. “I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected. And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”

“I don’t plan to attend the inauguration,” he added. “It will be the first one that I miss since I’ve been in Congress. You cannot be at home with something that you feel that is wrong, is not right.”

That turned out not to be true — Lewis skipped George W. Bush’s inauguration as well — but truth has been a conspicuous casualty in liberal discussion of the new administration.

The president-elect subsequently fired back with a litany of scathing tweets, laying into the congressman for the “horrible shape” of his district:

Apparently MLK’s niece agreed with Trump’s assessment, though she also expressed great respect and admiration for Lewis’ history as a civil rights activist and for his willingness to stand up for his beliefs, however shortsighted they may be.

“I actually admire Congressman Lewis’ legendary legacy of civil rights and working with my uncle M.L. in the civil rights movement of the 20th century,” she said. “And so I believe he should stay on that track, nonviolent conflict resolution. I believe that Congressman Lewis can actually help America by working with the president.”

Alveda King’s words displayed wisdom and compassion worthy of her illustrious uncle.
