Michael Flynn’s sudden resignation as President Trump’s national security adviser has been gleefully taken up by a media waiting for a scandal so that they could unleash the wolves.
And unleash them they did The New York Times carried no fewer than 29 stories Tuesday on the subject, and Dan Rather decided to scrap any remaining shreds of objectivity and respectability he had left by writing on Facebook that we may look back and say “that it is at least as big as Watergate.”
One writer with the Independent Journal Review had a different take on Flynn’s resignation letter, however. He argued that the media missed that the letter was a “punch in the face to the mainstream media.”
That’s because letter ends on a note of defiant optimism for the Trump administration’s future.
“Throughout my over thirty three years of honorable military service, and my tenure as the National Security Advisor, I have always performed my duties with the utmost of integrity and honesty to those I have served, to include the President of the United States,” Flynn’s letter read.
“I know with the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence and the superb team they are assembling, this team will go down in history as one of the greatest presidencies in U.S. history, and I firmly believe the American people will be well served as they all work together to help Make America Great Again.”
Flynn did apologize for not notifying the administration about his conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the United States. However, Flynn also highlighted his service to his country and praised the Trump administration.
IJR’s Kyle Becker writes that this was the “punch in the face” that Flynn managed to pull off. His letter, according to Becker, was a “pointed rebuttal to a media circling like hawks to attack any vulnerability with the hopes that the Trump administration fails. The American people could have used that kind of intense scrutiny for the last eight years; suddenly, in opposition, it is so eager to ‘resist’ the Trump administration it will find itself complicit with inside operatives who may be seeking to remove officials for ulterior — and yet unknown — motives.”
Now, a “punch in the face” may be a bit of an oversell, but Flynn’s letter definitely was not the tail-between-the-legs goodbye that the media had hoped it would be. Heck, he even got in a “Make America Great Again” line.
It’s yet another sign that the Trump administration is unbowed against media pressure, even as it acknowledges its mistakes.
