An Iraqi translator who had become a liberal cause celebre after he was detained at Kennedy Airport in New York City deviated from the script when he said that he liked President Trump in an interview shortly after his release.
Hameed Khalid Darweesh, an interpreter who had worked with American troops in Iraq for over a decade, made the remarks after his release. He had been detained for 19 hours at the airport, according to The New York Times.
Darweesh had become a bit of a celebrity after his detention, particularly because of his role interpreting for American troops, and didn’t take long for Darweesh’s predicament to spread across the internet.
Liberals played it up, of course.

Even Republican opponents of the new president got in on the action, as we can see from John McCain’s daughter, Meghan.

So, when Darweesh got out of detention after 19 hours, the left was ecstatic. Surely he was going to say some harsh words about Donald Trump.
Well, check out what happens at about 55 seconds into this video:

“I like him!” Definitely not what the media wanted to hear. For that matter, it seems to have gone over a bit worse with Rep. Velazquez, who appears about to be sick. Either way, it clearly didn’t work out how anyone had planned, and you could almost hear faces dropping all around him.
Darweesh wasn’t totally uncritical of the new policy. “What I do for this country? They put the cuffs on,” he said. “You know how many soldiers I touch by this hand?”
I completely sympathize with Darweesh’s plight and wish it didn’t have to happen. Unfortunately, we are dealing with a broken immigration system that the old administration deliberately left broken because admitting anything was wrong with it would have been a public relations nightmare.
The stricter vetting policies that the president plans to introduce should have been introduced years ago — and the fact that the left is scapegoating Trump for the problem is utterly inexcusable. Mr. Darweesh, at least, seems at some level to understand this.
