Man Fed Up with Taxes Gives Bills Special Treatment That Takes 60 Hours to Undo

Americans have become fed up with the amount of money the government takes from their hard-earned paychecks, which was perhaps best evidenced in 2015 when a Texas man paid his property taxes in a special way.

Timothy Andrew Norris made headlines when he arrived in person at the Wichita County Courthouse to pay his $600 property tax using individual dollar bills.

And, as if paying with cash wasn’t already cumbersome enough for the tax office personnel, the 27-year-old had also allegedly folded each bill so tightly that it “required tax office personnel approximately six minutes to unfold each bill,” according to Forbes.

For $600 individual one dollar bills, it took the personnel 3,600 minutes — or 60 hours — to unfold each bill, which, as you probably imagined, caused quite a scene in the office.

Tax Assessor Collector Tommy Smyth said that situation was “disrupting the operation and efficiency of the tax office,” so he asked Norris to leave, the New York Daily News reported.

The taxpayer refused to leave, which led to him being arrested and charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest after he attempted to break away from a police officer and had to be wrestled to the ground, according to Fox News.

He was later released after posting $500 bail.

Although Norris’ actions may seem facetious to some, paying in cash was actually a lawfully accepted form of payment for property taxes, according to Section 31.06 of the Texas Code.

A similar law for paying federal taxes, Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, also allows for taxpayers to use coins and currency when making their required payments.

However, there is no requirement for the tax office to stay open long enough to count your money, which may make it difficult for you to obtain a receipt as proof of timely payment, particularly if you take the approach Norris did and make it exceptionally difficult to count the money.

But something tells me that Norris hasn’t been the only person so irritated about the amount of money taken from us by the government that he wanted to inflict similar irritation on those he perceived as being responsible.
