A little girl who managed to survive a collision when a speeding car struck her mother’s Honda Accord at a Houston intersection early Saturday was heartlessly gunned from another vehicle — now, police are looking for the woman who killed her.
According to KPRC, the events unfolded about 2 a.m., when 8-year-old De’Maree Adkins was riding home with her mother, Latoyia Thomas, and their car was struck by a Pontiac Grand Prix that ran a red light while speeding with another car, a dark, four-door sedan.
“The light was green, and as soon as I got to the light it turned yellow, I couldn’t stop,” Thomas told the television station.
After the collision, Thomas said, the woman driving the Pontiac jumped into the sedan.
The sedan then pulled up next to Thomas’ car, and a woman leaned out a window with a gun and began shooting before the vehicle sped away. It was unclear if the gunwoman and the Grand Prix’s driver were the same person.
De’Maree was hit in the gunfire and died later at a hospital. Police said Thomas was not injured.
“I saw the girl let the window down and point the gun out the window, and she just started shooting,” Thomas said.
De’Maree was a third-grader at MacGregor Elementary School.
“She was a good girl, honor roll student, full of life. They took my baby away from me, why?” Thomas asked. “She didn’t deserve this. She didn’t. She was only 8.”
“Whoever you are, lady, justice will be served. They will get you,” Thomas added.
The Pontiac was found at the scene, but investigators have no suspects in the case yet, the Houston Chronicle reported. Police are looking for the sedan and Gov. Greg Abbott’s office is contributing $10,000 to the $5,000 Crime Stoppers award to solve the case.
A GoFundMe account created to help the family has raised more than $20,000.
Any child’s killing in street violence is a horror. But for young De’Maree to be shot to death after she survived a potentially deadly collision is a tragedy and such a senseless crime. Let’s hope authorities can track down who did this and put them behind bars.
