President Donald Trump had his much-anticipated first phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and liberals were excited to hear that Trump slammed him.
But then they found out what Trump was upset about, according to a White House leak reported by The Washington Post, and it turned out to be one of their favorite pet subjects.
In the call, as reported by Rueters, Trump denounced an Obama-era treaty that capped U.S. and Russian deployment of nuclear warheads. Trump called the “New START” treaty “a bad deal” for the United States.
Putin raised the possibility of extending the 2010 treaty, at which point Trump paused to ask his aides a question. Trump had previously questioned the wisdom of New START during a debate in the 2016 presidential election, saying Russia had “outsmarted” the United States with the treaty, which he dubbed “START-Up.”
After speaking with his aides, Trump returned to the call and slammed Putin over the deal, saying it was bad for the United States and favored Russia.
The treaty gives both countries until February 2018 to reduce their deployed strategic nuclear warheads to no more than 1,550 — the lowest level in decades — as well as calling for a limit on deployed land and submarine-based missiles and nuclear-capable bombers.
The White House would not go into detail regarding the call, but White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters it was “very productive.”
Productive indeed. Liberals need to be careful what they wish for, because in Trump’s administration you’re likely to get it and more. If nothing else, the call made it clear that Putin doesn’t have Trump in his pocket like the left’s narrative has suggested for months.
That and a possible revision to an Obama-era treaty? That’s what we call a win-win.
