Reading, writing and arithmetic: Whoo knead’s them when u dont haev diversaty???
That’s at least the message being sent by the state of New York, which is scrapping a test designed to ensure that teachers have basic literacy skills. According to The Associated Press, the test is getting the boot because it did not produce enough diversity.
The AP reported that “the literacy test raised alarms from the beginning because just 46 percent of Hispanic test-takers and 41 percent of black test-takers passed it on the first try, compared with 64 percent of white candidates.”
“We want high standards, without a doubt. Not every given test is going to get us there,” said Leslie Soodak, a Pace University education professor who served on the board of regents task force that recommended eliminating the Academic Literacy Skills Test. A final decision had not been announced late Monday, but it is widely expected.
“”Having a white workforce really doesn’t match our student body anymore,” Soodak added.
“There’s not a test in the country that doesn’t have disproportionate performance on the part of blacks and Latinos,” said Kate Walsh, the president of National Council on Teacher Quality. The AP reports that she believes minorities “don’t score as well as whites on the literacy test because of factors like poverty and the legacy of racism.”
However, she did say that dropping the test was “a crying shame.”
“New York put together a suite of testing products that really got at the lack of rigor in teacher prep,” Walsh said.
Apparently, the liberal media agree that the test is racist. ABC’s headline on the test’s scrapping? “Test meant to screen teachers instead weeded out minorities.” As if asking teachers to pass a basic literacy test was somehow discriminatory.
Liberals believe that poverty in America is partially the result of systemic racism and bigotry. I don’t agree, but fair enough. Let’s assume for a moment that it is.
The only reliable way we’ve seen to eradicate the cycle of poverty in this country is education. Instead of giving these students the best education it can, however, what New York has done is patronize these children and their parents by ensuring “diversity” at the expense of educational standards.
If New York was really interested in eliminating “poverty and the legacy of racism,” it would screen to get the best teachers it could. Instead, it has decided to virtue-signal and let standards fall by the wayside, all in the name of political correctness.
