Richard Nixon may not be remembered too fondly in these parts, but there was one thing Tricky Dick knew how to do, and that was pick a winner.

And according to him, Donald J. Trump was definitely a winner.

In a letter sent to Trump almost 30 years ago by the former president, Nixon praised a political appearance on TV by the then-young mogul and said that he had confidence that Trump could win any political office he set his mind to.

The letter dated from 1987, just after Trump went on Phil Donahue’s NBC show. Former President Nixon’s wife, Pat Nixon, had watched the broadcast.

“I did not see the program, but Mrs. Nixon told me that you were great on the Donahue Show,” Nixon wrote. “As you can imagine, she is an expert on politics and she predicts that whenever you decide to run for office you will be a winner!”

The letter has been passed around Twitter, Facebook and other forms of sundry social media, with some noticing the eerie significance of Nixon’s prediction and others (usually those who were With Her™) making snarky remarks about it.

One Twitter liberal noted, “Indeed I am sick to death of the ‘winning,’ just as Trump predicted.”

While the left seems content to seize upon the letter as yet more invective (don’t expect it to flame out any time soon, either), we prefer to see it as Nixon seeing something many of us didn’t.

Trump has always been a man with a keen interest in politics and also someone who knows where the pulse of America is. Say what you will about him, but his campaign has struck a chord like no other.

Richard Nixon, too, was considered an improbable candidate when he made his comeback in the 1968 election. Of course, Nixon’s paranoia ended up doing him in, but he knew what it took, and so did his wife.

And this letter proves it.
