The year 2016 has not been a kind one to Lena Dunham, and the “Girls” actress and unregenerate liberal managed to close the year of Trump with yet another self-inflicted wound.
Now, she’s apologizing for her tasteless remark about wanting to have an abortion — and, as part of her apology, donating to pro-abortion organizations and urging others to do the same. Because apparently, learning from mistakes is just not how Lena Dunham doth roll.
During the episode, she told her audience that she really wished she could say she’s had a growing, viable fetus violently sucked from her womb by doctors, all so that she could show political solidarity with pro-choicers.
“Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had,” Dunham said.
Dunham’s comments were predictably seized upon by conservatives. Unpredictably, the left actually went after her, too, as liberal author Lauren Duca demonstrates:
Lena Dunham just set the abortion conversation back so far that Mike Pence is probably thinking about sending her an Edible Arrangement

And she wasn’t the only one.
.@lenadunham FYI an abortion is not something you "get to have." It's an awful experience one SHOULDN'T wish for like a gift from Santa 😑🙄

I can’t even imagine how offensive Lena Dunham’s comments are to women who actually had to go through abortions

It didn’t take long for Dunham to issue a kinda-apology on Instagram.
“My latest podcast episode was meant to tell a multifaceted story about reproductive choice in America, to explain the many reasons women do or don’t choose to have children and what bodily autonomy really means. I’m so proud of the medley of voices in the episode,” she began, in a missive written underneath a picture that read “choice.”
“I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won’t diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated. My words were spoken from a sort of ‘delusional girl’ persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that’s what my TV show is too) and it didn’t translate. That’s my fault.
“I would never, ever intentionally trivialize the emotional and physical challenges of terminating a pregnancy,” she claimed. “My only goal is to increase awareness and decrease stigma.”
I’m not even going to go after the “delusional girl” remark, as that fruit hangs so low I can only assume it’s been marinating in the dirt and mud for far too long. However, it is something we’ve long suspected about Dunham — and a shocking truth about herself we’re glad to finally hear her admit.
Also, to say that she “would never, ever intentionally trivialize” abortion — did she even listen to her own remarks?
If you look in the Oxford English Dictionary under “intentionally trivializing abortion” … well, you’d see a picture of Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards. But she’d be holding up Lena Dunham’s quote on a piece of paper.
My latest podcast episode was meant to tell a multifaceted story about reproductive choice in America, to explain the many reasons women do or don't choose to have children and what bodily autonomy really means. I'm so proud of the medley of voices in the episode. I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won't diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated. My words were spoken from a sort of "delusional girl" persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that's what my TV show is too) and it didn't translate. That's my fault. I would never, ever intentionally trivialize the emotional and physical challenges of terminating a pregnancy. My only goal is to increase awareness and decrease stigma. I take reproductive choice in America more seriously than I take literally anything else, and therefore own full responsibility for any words I speak that don't convey this truth clearly. I know plenty of people will never like a thing that leaves my lips, mea culpas or no, but this apology is for the women who have placed their trust in me. You mean everything to me. My life is and always will be devoted to reproductive justice and freedom. You know how in some households you curse and have to put money in a jar? Well in mine, if you mess up your pro-choice messaging you have to give a sizable donation to abortion funds (https://abortionfunds.org/need-abortion) in New York, Texas and Ohio 💰I look forward to fighting with you all for the next four years and beyond.
Dunham decided to end her post apologizing for trivializing abortion by … further trivializing abortion.
“You know how in some households you curse and have to put money in a jar?” Dunham wrote. “Well in mine, if you mess up your pro-choice messaging you have to give a sizable donation to abortion funds … in New York, Texas and Ohio.”
Yeah, donating to a pro-abortion organization is exactly like putting money in a swear jar.
We shouldn’t be shocked, though. This is, after all, a woman who essentially admitted to doing something very close to the textbook definition of sexual assault with her own sister in a book of essays, according to Truth Revolt, then fell into a “rage spiral” when she got called on it. Just before the election, she posted a video online celebrating what she termed the “extinction of white males.”
And what has this “delusional” behavior gotten her? Has she been scorned and ostracized by the left? Far from it. She’s considered a leading spokeswoman on a number of causes and was an ardent and highly visible supporter of Hillary Clinton.
And even with all of that support, she’s still had a dreadful year.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, Lena Dunham. I hope that 2017 finds you better than 2016 did. However, with that level of “delusional girl” rubbish, I get the feeling things are only going to get worse for you.
