If you’re a conservative like we are, this thought may have escaped your lips on election night: “God bless the USA!” Now, as Trump gets inaugurated, you get to hear it sung.
According to the U.K. Daily Mail, Lee Greenwood — the country music legend and the man behind the epic Reagan-era anthem “God Bless the USA” — is one of the major stars set to play the Trump inauguration.
According to the Mail, Greenwood will be performing along with Toby Keith and 3 Doors Down at the “Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration” on Jan. 19, one day before the inauguration.
WRC-TV reported that actor Jon Voight, another major Trump supporter, will take part in the festivities. TMZ also said that crooner Paul Anka had wanted to perform, but could not due to custody issues with his children.
“There was a dialogue to do it,” said Anka, who has been friends with Trump for 50 years. “‘My Way’ is his favorite song, but the back-story of it is I’ve been in a custody battle for two years for my son Ethan, and we have a new schedule now and I’m unable to do it.”
Oh well. While I like Anka, it’s worth pointing out that anyone under the age of 40 knows him primarily as the namesake for Lorelai’s dog on “Gilmore Girls.” Maybe they can get the pooch? Trump would definitely sew up the votes of millennials who really like flannel pajamas, cocoa, knitting (badly) and name-dropping Thomas Pynchon even though they never made it past the first paragraph of “Gravity’s Rainbow.”
Now, remember how the media was making a big stink over celebrities turning Trump’s entreaties to perform down? Among the performers who apparently said no were Celine Dion, Andrea Boccelli and Elton John.
While Elton John’s credentials are unimpeachable, the rest of that lineup doesn’t approach either Greenwood or Toby Keith, either in talent or patriotism (Dion comes from the frozen land up north, as the lyrics of “Blame Canada” duly informed us).
And while 3 Doors Down isn’t exactly terrific or anything, I’d still rather sit through an end-to-end listening session of their entire discography, b-sides and all, than suffer once more through “That’s the Way it Is.”
In other words, Trump’s inauguration will be awesome and patriotic. And no Celine Dion. Can’t stress that enough. God bless the USA, indeed.
