Sure, James Comey’s FBI may have issued the most compromised statement in the world on Sunday, saying that their review of the emails on Anthony Weiner’s laptop didn’t change their opinion on whether Hillary Clinton should be criminally charged.
However, that didn’t stop an outspoken Republican congressmen from proposing a different route in the pursuit of justice regarding the former secretary of state’s email practices.
In a speech at a Donald Trump rally in Sioux City, Iowa, Rep. Steve King said that if the FBI director isn’t willing to follow through on a new investigation, Republican members of Congress certainly are. And, according to congressman King, they have something surprising at their disposal.
“The good thing is, Congress has preserved them for our access,” Rep. King said Sunday with regard to the hundreds of thousands of emails found on the laptop belonging to disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner.
“So the Weiner leaks, the WikiLeaks, you name your leaks, we’ve got our hands on all of them — 650,000 emails,” Rep King divulged, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
“It’s crazy to think that this America is going to step into a world of Hillary,” Rep. King continued, “a world of Hillary with her corruption that goes so deep that we’re now at 750,000 hidden emails.”
Left-leaning media, including Newsweek, are now reporting that most of the emails found on the computer seized from Weiner, Huma Abedin’s estranged husband, were duplicates of what the FBI had already reviewed.
But that doesn’t answer several critical questions, such as: How did all those communications to, from, and concerning Hillary get onto that unauthorized computer? And since it was an unsecured personal laptop, who might have had access to the communications that contained highly sensitive, classified information?
While Rep. King’s foreboding words might have been the headline, the meat of the story coming out of Iowa is in what he said — Congress has the full load of emails from Weiner’s personal laptop and is not likely to be quite as quick to dismiss them as FBI Director Comey has been.
Even Rep. Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House who’s been cool to the Trump candidacy, has condemned Comey’s decision.
“Regardless of this decision, the undisputed finding of the FBI’s investigation is that Secretary Clinton put our nation’s secrets at risk and in doing so compromised our national security,” Ryan wrote in a statement.
“She simply believes she’s above the law and always plays by her own rules. This is a pattern with the Clintons, and the American people should not have to endure four more years of their scandal and baggage. Fortunately, the American people have the opportunity to ensure Secretary Clinton never gets her hands on classified information again. Let’s bring the Clinton era to an end by voting for Donald J. Trump on Tuesday.”
That’s right: “she simply believes she’s above the law and always plays by her own rules.” Is that the president you want? Is that the leader America needs?
Could a congressional probe of Hillary Clinton actually dig down to reveal the truth? Would the forces arrayed to protect the Clintons allow such a revelation? It’s hard to tell. After all, because of the uncertainties of Senate elections, the Democrats could control the upper house, making any sort of real investigation inconsequential if not altogether impossible.
The results of the election will tell the tale.
