Kellyanne Conway Considers Taking Lead Role in Outside Trump Support Group

President-elect Donald Trump’s senior adviser Kellyanne Conway has shown interest in leading a political organization outside the White House and the Republican Party to help keep the soon-to-be president’s base of supporters primed for the battles that lie ahead.

According to Politico, the organization would function similarly to Organizing for America, a project founded after the 2008 election of President Barack Obama for the purpose of essentially serving as his grassroots arm.

“For Trump, the concept is to tap into the grassroots enthusiasm that led to his unlikely victory, and to keep his supporters engaged for upcoming legislative battles in Congress,” according to the report.

Conway told The Washington Post that she had not yet decided whether to join Trump at the White House or run the new organization. She did made it clear, though, that whoever ultimately leads the organization would need to be “close to the president” and serious about the job.

“He’s going to be a very active president who wants to accomplish things quickly,” she said. “We want to honor that by being ready.”

During a discussion with The Hill last week, Conway said that the group’s tactics would involve combining advertising support, door-knocking and other grassroots activities to bolster the president-elect’s legislative agenda.

For instance, the latter activities could include targeting Democrat senators up for re-election in 2018 “by mobilizing followers to call their offices or target the lawmakers on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms,” the Post explained.

The organization could also wind up resembling Citizens for America, a group launched by supporters of former President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s. Though the group neither campaigned for nor endorsed Reagan, it nevertheless mobilized his supporters, thus making it easier for him to move ahead with his agenda.

“Trump has the ability to do Citizens for America on steroids through the internet,” Washington-based Republican consultant and lobbyist Richard F. Hohlt told The Post. “They’re smart enough to know how to harness the movement to their advantage. This is going to be huge. Republicans have never had this before.”
