After a brief absence, former Judge Andrew Napolitano has returned to the Fox News Channel and made a bold statement about his previous claims about the Obama administration gathering information about President Donald Trump before the election.
About two weeks ago, the judge was sidelined from the network after he reported that three sources had told him that former President Barack Obama went outside the chain of command in 2016 and used the British intelligence office GCHQ to conduct surveillance of then-presidential candidate Trump.
Speaking with Bill Hemmer during a news segment Wednesday, Napolitano did not back down from his previous claims.
When asked if he still stood by those remarks, the senior judicial analyst said he did.
“Yes, I do,” Napolitano stated. “And the sources stand by it.”
“The American public needs to know more about this rather than less because a lot of the government’s surveillance authorities will expire in the fall, and there will be a great debate about how much authority we want the government to have to surveil us,” the judge said.
“And the more the American public knows about this, the more informed their and the Congress’ decision will be,” he added.
He also said that he thought more information on the topic would become available.
Watch the segment with Hemmer below:
Napolitano first made the assertion in an op-ed piece for Fox News in which he claimed that Obama had enlisted foreign intelligence to watch Trump because that would leave no trail to the White House.
Napolitano was unequivocal in the piece:
“Sources have told me that the British foreign surveillance service, the Government Communications Headquarters, known as GCHQ, most likely provided Obama with transcripts of Trump’s calls,” he wrote.
The British government denied Napolitano’s claims, and Fox News anchor Shep Smith denounced the allegation, adding that the news division at the network had been unable to confirm the judge’s assertion.
While the issue is still cloudy, it’s good to see Napolitano is back on the air, as his insightful commentary is always worth listening to.
