A Detroit mother of a drunk driver was caught laughing in court during a victim’s statement about the man her daughter killed and got slapped with a jail sentence of her own for acting like the case was a joke, the New York Post reported.
Judge Qiana Lillard noticed Donna Kosal and her boyfriend giggling in the back of the courtroom Thursday as Jerome Zirker’s family members gave statements about losing their father when Kosal’s daughter, Amanda, killed him while driving drunk.
Lillard chastised the couple for their rude behavior.
“Whoever can sit here at a tragic moment like this and laugh and smile when somebody has lost a family member … in the entire time that Mr. Zirker’s sister was speaking, that clown — and that’s what I am going to call him, a clown — was sitting there smiling and laughing,” said Lillard.
“And you can go, too,” she said, addressing Kosal. “Because if you don’t know how to act, you can go to jail. So leave.”
Kosal was taken into custody for criminal contempt and spent the night in jail. Lillard originally sentenced Kosal to 93 days in jail for contempt, but reduced the sentence to one day in jail, CBS reported.
“These are very serious matters,” the judge said in court the following day. “I understand that you all are very upset because your loved one is going to prison, but guess what, she’s going to prison for the choices that she made. These people are here grieving, saddened because a senseless act took away their loved one, and you’re sitting here acting like it’s a joke?” Lillard said, according to WDIV.
