Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura’s attempt to target the family of deceased Navy SEAL Chris Kyle has hit a roadblock — for now, at least.
According to Fox News, the Supreme Court decided Monday not to hear arguments brought by Ventura against Kyle’s family. But while that sounded simple enough, there was much more to the story.
The story first began to unfold five years ago when Ventura launched a suit against Kyle, who was still alive at the time, claiming that his recently released book, “American Sniper,” contained lies about him.
Specifically, Kyle had written that during a veterans’ meet-up inside a California bar, he heard someone make disparaging remarks about Navy SEALs, saying in effect that they “deserved to lose a few” in the Iraq War. This despicable remark spurred the Navy SEAL into slamming his fist right into the unnamed individual’s face, sending him toppling to the ground.
During interviews following the publication of his book, Kyle stated that the person he had punched was none other than Ventura. It was this that provoked the former governor into launching his lawsuit, as reported by The Washington Times.
This is where the story gets a bit haywire. In 2014, a jury trial concluded in Ventura’s favor, ruling that he be awarded $500,000 for defamation and $1.35 million for unjust enrichment. But then two years later, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upended the jury’s ruling.
And since the Supreme Court refused Monday to hear Ventura’s final plea, the appeals court’s ruling would remain in place. This was both good news and bad: good because he would not be able to take the Kyle family’s money, but bad because he may pursue the defamation allegations in court again if he so desires.
Speaking of which, Ventura has vowed that “the truth will come out in the new trial,” as noted by the New York Post.
Considering the damage this must be doing to Kyle’s children, as well as his wife, Ventura should really reconsider — if for no other reason than to prove to the world that he is not the monster he is increasingly looking like.
