It’s not just conservatives in America that are going to be throwing a party as the Barack Obama presidency takes that final trip into the dustbin of history. No, we’ll be joined by right-thinking individuals from around the world — and nowhere is that happiness more acutely felt than in Israel.
The Jewish state — traditionally one of America’s closest allies — has been treated so injuriously by the outgoing president that Israeli lawmakers could probably pay their national budget by selling for scrap metal all the knives the Obama administration has stuck in its back.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already intimated that he won’t be terribly saddened by President Obama’s exit from the White House. In a video uploaded Thursday, the mayor of Jerusalem made his message a little more bluntly.
According to The Washington Post, Mayor Nir Barkat used the video to disparage President Obama and his actions regarding Israel as well as to praise President-elect Donald Trump and his accession to power.
“My fellow citizens, during the last eight years, the Obama administration has pushed for a settlement-building freeze, has surrendered to the Iranians and radical Islam and abandoned Israel to a hostile U.N. resolution,” Barkat said in the video, which was recorded in Hebrew with English subtitles.
It then switches to a clip of President Obama saying, “There’s no magic to the phrase, ‘radical Islam,’” his defense for not using the term.
“This week President Donald Trump enters the White House. Let’s all welcome him together as our friend,” Barkat said, before switching to a clip of Trump saying he would move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. (During Obama’s presidency, the administration often refused to admit Jerusalem was even part of Israel.)
Barkat said Trump’s promise to move the embassy was “conveying a clear message to the world: Jerusalem is Israel’s undivided capital. Join me in signing a letter supporting President Trump’s decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem and his decisions supporting Israel. Let’s make the U.S. and Israel relationship great again!”
It’s little surprise that Barack Obama is an unpopular man in Israel, particularly given his administration’s shenanigans at the United Nations. However, I never thought I would see the mayor of Israel’s holy city essentially tell an American president to not let the Oval Office door hit him in the butt.
Then again, I never thought I would see a president like Barack Obama.
