Christian leader Jerry Falwell Jr. will head a new education reform task force under President Donald Trump that would identify changes that should be made to policies and procedures of Department of Education.
The exact mission of the task force has yet to be announced. However in an interview with The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Liberty University president said he saw it as a response to what he called “overreaching regulation” and micromanagement by the department.
“In the Department of Education, there’s too much intrusion into the independent accreditation,” Falwell said in a separate interview with The Washington Post.
“There’s too much intrusion into the operation of universities and colleges. I’ve got a whole list of concerns. It mainly has to do with deregulation,” he added.
The evangelical leader endorsed Trump during the election along with other evangelical leaders, including founder of Focus on the Family James Dobson and president of the Family Research Council Tony Perkins.
While other Christian leaders expressed displeasure with Trump regarding his treatment of women, Falwell said he believed Trump was the better choice to advance the causes that are important to conservative Christians.
Falwell was considered for the post of Trump’s secretary of education, but told The Associated Press he had declined the offer as he wanted to stay close to his home in Lynchburg, Virginia, where Liberty University is also based.
This country has needed an education reform task force for quite some time. Our disastrous public education system has been failing our students for decades, and the price of a college education has skyrocketed to the point that graduates are often saddled with huge loans that take years to pay off.
Hopefully, we will begin to see changes that need to be made in the Department of Education.
