Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding his appointment as attorney general, beginning Tuesday. While Democrats will probably do their best to block the nomination, Sessions has one thing going for him that they don’t.
He’s apparently well-liked.
The Washington Post reported that the senator’s biggest asset is his friendly personality.
“He is one of the more well-liked members of the Senate, a place that still retains elements of one of the world’s most exclusive clubs,” according to the Post.
The Post also reported that Sessions is “genial, respectful and patient toward colleagues and staff.”
This observation must enrage Democrats, who have fought to make racial allegations against Sessions stick.
Their arguments failed to make an impact when people like Albert Turner Jr. endorsed Sessions. Turner, you may recall, is the son of a civil rights activist whom Sessions prosecuted for voter fraud.
“I have known Sen. Sessions for many years, beginning with the voter fraud case in Perry County in which my parents were defendants,” Turner Jr. said, according to The Washington Post. “My differences in policy and ideology with him do not translate to personal malice. He is not a racist.”
Even Vice President Joe Biden didn’t have a problem with Sessions, calling for Democrats to be open-minded about the senator’s nomination. “I wouldn’t have appointed Jeff, but people learn, people change,” the vice president said.
It’s hard to argue when those who should be up in arms about Sessions’ nomination don’t see much of a problem with it.
The left might still try to put up a fight during the hearings, but it appears as though it might be one they’ll have a hard time winning.
