When it comes to combating crime on a national level, newly minted Attorney General Jeff Sessions is going to draw a line in the sand — and liberals aren’t going to like it.
In his first speech as the nation’s top law enforcement official, the former Alabama senator stated unequivocally that America “has a crime problem.” That’s something you didn’t hear too often from the Obama White House.
According to The Daily Caller, Attorney General Sessions also said he would use “every ounce of strength” toward “preserving and protecting the Constitution and the safety of this country.”
“We have a crime problem,” Sessions said in the Thursday speech, delivered at the White House after his swearing-in. “I wish the blip, the rise that we are seeing in crime in America today, were some sort of aberration or a blip, but my best judgment, having been involved in criminal law enforcement for many years, is that this is a dangerous permanent trend that places the health and safety of the American people at risk.
“We will deploy the talents and abilities of the Department of Justice in the most effective way possible to confront this rise in crime and to protect the people of our country,” Sessions continued.
“We have an increased threat since I was United States attorney from terrorism … We’re going to respond effectively to the threat of terrorism, and you can count on your Department of Justice to do so in an effective way.”
Here’s the full speech:
Sessions also seemed to echo President Donald Trump’s beliefs on immigration, saying that America needs to have a “lawful system of immigration, one that serves the interests of the people of the United States.”
“That’s not wrong, that’s not immoral, that’s not indecent,” he said. “We need to end this lawlessness that threatens the public safety and pulls down wages of working Americans.”
It was a pretty bold statement from the attorney general, and one that the liberal media quickly pounced on. CBS News published an article about the speech titled “Jeff Sessions’ claim about violent crime contradicted by FBI data.”
And how was it contradicted, you might ask? Well, CBS conceded that there had been a rise in violent crime in 2015, but noted that it had been falling over a 25-year period. Therefore, the network concluded that the sentence, “My best judgment, having been involved in criminal law enforcement for many years, is that this is a dangerous, permanent trend” is contradicted by FBI evidence.
Let’s think about that astonishing assertion for a second. CBS says that Sessions’ “best judgment” about the future is verifiably incorrect because of what happened in the past, even though that trend no longer seems to be happening.
More proof that you don’t need sketchy Ukrainian websites to get fake news. Heck, in most places, you don’t even need cable.
Meanwhile, all you need to do is take a look at Chicago and know that while that problem may not be spread all over America yet, there’s a major danger that it will. The Obama administration refused to acknowledge this, and the media mostly let it slide. Now, Sessions is addressing it, and media are losing their minds.
