First daughter Ivanka Trump may have just recently officially become part of her father’s team, but it appears she has been working on women’s issues since January.
Politico reported that Trump “quietly reached out” to the president of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, in an attempt to find common ground on the issue of abortion and to inform her father, President Donald Trump, regarding the organization.
“The purpose of the meeting, from Cecile’s point of view, was to make sure that Ivanka fully understood what Planned Parenthood does, how it is funded, and why it would be a terrible idea for Planned Parenthood to be removed from being able to see Medicaid patients,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
“The main thing that Cecile Richards was doing was explaining that the money doesn’t actually go to abortions — we get reimbursed the same way a hospital does,” she claimed. “We were clearing up misinformation about how this work.”
That, of course, is a stretch, as money is fungible, but it isn’t surprising to hear the organization making such claims.
Politico noted that Trump did not impress Richards, who criticized Trump on Wednesday for silence on the Republican health care bill, stating that anyone working in the White House “is responsible for addressing why women are in the cross hairs of basically every single policy we’ve seen in this administration.”
That, of course, is another stretch. Every policy? Women are “in the cross hairs” of taking a tougher stand on North Korea? Riiiight.
But, again, we’re not surprised.
Trump defended her actions in an interview on CBS, where she said that there are many ways to have her voice heard. She indicated that when she does disagree with her father, he knows it.
This meeting might have raised some eyebrows about Trump’s role and her influence on the president, but we will have to wait and see how these kinds of meetings impact the president — if at all.
