One of the biggest reasons conservatives supported President-elect Donald Trump was his commitment to preserving our Second Amendment rights — rights that have been constantly threatened over the last eight years.

In September 2015, Trump issued his proposed policy regarding gun rights, arguing that “concealed carry … is a right, not a privilege,” and contended for national recognition of concealed carry permits from every state.

The fact that Trump went on to win the presidency suggests that voters agreed with the GOP candidate on this issue and expected him to fervently protect our Second Amendment rights.

Concealed carry regulations have been the topic of fierce debate across the country, as every state in the union has its own policies governing who can and cannot carry a concealed firearm. Some states require a permit, some require taking a class, and some require proficiency tests, while others allow owners to obtain a permit online.

Furthermore, while some states recognize other states’ permits, others do not, which puts law-abiding gun owners in a predicament when traveling across state lines.

Many travelers have been forced to find temporary secure storage in their vehicles while in a state where they can’t legally carry, but sometimes that is illegal too.

Trump has proposed that concealed carry permits be valid in all 50 states because it “is a right, not a privilege.”

“The right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway,” Trump said. “That’s why I have a concealed carry permit and why tens of millions of Americans do, too.”

In the policy proposal, Trump compared concealed carry permits to drivers’ licenses, which are accepted in every state.

“(I)t’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state,” he said. “If we can do that for driving – which is a privilege, not a right – then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.”

Proponents of Second Amendment rights can breathe a sigh of relief that we will soon have someone in the White House who understands, respects and fights for one of our most important rights as Americans.
