Donald Trump may not be in office yet, but he’s already made one more public outreach to the family of a fallen officer than we can ever remember President Barack Obama making.
According to the New York Daily News, President-elect Trump called the widow of NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo to offer his condolences after her husband was shot in the line of duty.
The 41-year-old officer was shot last week in the Bronx as he and other officers approached an ex-con who was in a crashed Jeep Cherokee. Tuozzolo managed to warn the other officers, but was shot and killed himself. He left behind a wife and a son.
Msgr. Robert Romano told reporters that Trump had also sent condolences to both the widow and the son before the hero cop’s Massapequa, New York, funeral.
“His final act on this Earth, he served in exemplary fashion,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said during his remarks at Tuozzolo’s funeral. “He could have sent his fellow officers, but he took the lead and he gave his life protecting his fellow officers and all of us.”
“He would take on any chore given to him,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill told mourners, noting that Tuozzolo’s usual response was, “I got it, I’m good.”
“For the sake of his family in blue and for the sake of strangers, Paul kept moving toward the danger and the unknown — as you all do, every day. Always the protector, Paul instinctively put others before himself,” O’Neill said. “After all, if not Paul, who would do this work?”
Over 10,000 police officers lined the streets of Massapequa for the Thursday funeral.
Notably absent from any of this: President Obama.
In fact, the president has been noticeably absent from any of numerous acts of aggression against police officers we’ve seen since Ferguson, Missouri, became a household name back in the summer of 2014. Yes, he will sometimes state offhandedly that such anti-police violence is a shame — as everyone who isn’t severely deranged would attest to.
As for sending someone to the funeral or calling the family of the fallen, that simply isn’t on the president’s radar. Meanwhile, representatives from his administration have attended the funerals of Michael Brown and Freddie Gray.
If you want to know how things are going to change now that Donald Trump is the president-elect, you need to look no further to what he did for Sgt. Tuozzolo.
