During a speech at a gender equality conference in San Francisco, Hillary Clinton made it clear that men who oppose President Donald Trump’s critics are guilty of sexism, using Fox News host Bill O’Reilly and White House press secretary Sean Spicer as her targets.
O’Reilly on Tuesday mocked Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., who has said she wants to force Trump out of office and cast doubt on the patriotism of anyone who does not share her views.
“We’re saying to those who say they’re patriotic but they’ve turned a blind eye to the destruction that [Trump’s] about to cause this country, ‘You’re not nearly as patriotic as we are,’” Waters said during a speech on the House floor.
However, what drew Clinton’s ire was an off-the-cuff remark O’Reilly made while watching a clip of that speech on Fox & Friends.
“I didn’t hear a word she said,” O’Reilly said of Waters. “I was looking at the James Brown wig. If we have a picture of James Brown — it’s the same wig.”
O’Reilly later apologized for the remark, but Clinton pounced upon it.
“One of our own California congressmen, Maxine Waters, was taunted with a racist joke about her hair,” Clinton said. “Too many women, especially women of color, have had a lifetime of practice taking precisely these kinds of indignities in stride.”
“But why should we have to? And any woman who thinks this couldn’t be directed at her is living in a dream world,” Clinton said.
Clinton also urged her audience to show empathy for April Ryan, a member of the White House press corps who engaged in a heated exchange with Spicer on Tuesday.
“April Ryan, a respected journalist with unrivaled integrity, was doing her job just this afternoon in the White House press room when she was patronized and cut off trying to ask a question,” Clinton said.
During the daily briefing, Ryan sought to ask Spicer about the various investigations facing the Trump administration.
“Sean, don’t seem so happy. Anyway, with all of these investigations, questions of what is is, how does this administration try to revamp its image?” she said, later adding, “You’ve got Russia.”
“You’ve got Russia,” Spicer replied. “If the president puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight, somehow that’s a Russian connection.”
After some back-and-forth, Spicer told Ryan, “stop shaking your head” as she asked a question and later noted, “April, hold on, it seems like you’re hell-bent on trying to make sure that whatever image you want to tell about this White House stays.”
Clinton is also slated to make an appearance in Washington, D.C. on Friday to give a speech at Georgetown University. According to a Georgetown press release, her speech will focus on “the important role that women can play in international politics and peace building efforts.”
