A ban on certain semi-automatic rifles in California is set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2017, resulting in customers scrambling to get their weapons before the deadline.
According to KTXL-TV, the new regulations will force all gun owners with magazines larger than 10 rounds to turn them in to authorities. It also bans semi-automatic rifles with so-called “bullet buttons” — making it easier to quickly remove and switch magazines.
However, the Los Angeles Times noted that the new law grandfathered in rifles with “bullet buttons” registered before Jan. 1, meaning many Californians were scrambling to meet the deadline.
“When Gov. (Jerry) Brown signed that bill, the first 30 days in July were just insane,” said Joshua Deaser, owner of Sacramento store Just Guns. “It died down for a while but now we are back with everyone trying to get what they can before the end of the year.”
“We have people lined up out the door and around the block,” said Terry McGuire, owner of the Get Loaded gun store in Grand Terrace.
“In the less than six months since the July 1 signing of the rifle ban, 257,895 semiautomatic rifles have been purchased, eclipsing the 153,931 rifle purchases reported to the state in all of 2015,” the Los Angeles Times reported.
Of course, what this doesn’t report is who this bill doesn’t affect — namely, Californians who aren’t concerned with following the new law. Criminals don’t care whether the state mandates whether or not they have magazines larger than 10 rounds. Why should they? They’re criminals.
This is the problem with gun control legislation, and it’s behind this silly ban of rifles. This bill is about as likely to reduce shooting deaths as Gov. Jerry Brown is to play “California Über Alles” at his next dinner party. Yet, Democrat Assemblyman Phil Ting, who co-authored the bill that led to this ban, insisted that such rifles “enable shooters to take the most lives in the least amount of time.”
To whatever degree that’s true, it’s still true; this bill has done absolutely nothing to change it. The only thing that’s happened is that these firearms are about to be taken out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.
What a waste of time and money — and an affront to the idea of self-defense.
