Now that President Barack Obama is about to head into retirement from the presidency, the ultimate irony is that he may find it a bit more difficult to play golf than he did before.
That’s at least the message from one golf club he was apparently set to join, which the New York Post reported may prevent the president from becoming a member over his anti-Israel policies.
According to the Post, the outgoing president was set to receive a complementary membership in the Woodmont Country Club in Maryland after he leaves office. Introductory fees at the country club are $80,000 and yearly dues are almost $10,000.
The club, in D.C. suburb Rockville, promises “two premiere golf courses … known across the country for their spectacular championship play and … rave reviews by golfers throughout the years” on its website.
“It’s a very exclusive, high-end club,” one source said. Not bad for a former community organizer.
However, Obama’s time on the exclusive links may have hit a snag. The Forward reported that Woodmont Country Club was primarily Jewish — in fact, it was founded in 1913 because its original members couldn’t join other D.C.-area golf clubs because of their Jewish faith.
So, needless to say, its membership isn’t happy about Obama’s recent repositioning of himself as the Marcus Junius Brutus to Israel’s Julius Caesar.
“Originally, this was supposed to be a back-door thing to get this done and give him the membership — free of charge — and circumvent the rules,” a source told the Post. “But now, with the U.N. thing, they are not in position or likely to do it.”
The “U.N. thing,” of course, was the Obama administration’s failure to veto a Security Council vote on an anti-Israel resolution involving settlements, followed by a speech by Secretary of State John Kerry that gave Israel the geopolitical equivalent of a “you’re going to bed without dinner” lecture.
“Can you imagine how angry I would be if I had paid $80K to have to look at this guy who has done more to damage Israel than any president in American history?” an unnamed official in a Washington-based Jewish organization said of the situation.
There are so many ironies about this that I hardly know which one to pick. Part of me wants to seize upon the fact that citizen Barack Obama may find it more difficult to play golf than did President Barack Obama, the man charged with the most exigent job in the free world.
However, the one irony I find most fitting is that Barack Obama is, once and for all, going to start living outside of the bubble of sycophantic bureaucracy and and enabling media. And he’s going to find out that not everyone shares his assessment of himself.
