George & Barbara Bush Celebrate 72nd Wedding Anniversary

Happy wedding anniversary to former President George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara! The couple was married 72 years ago on Jan. 6.

According to Politico, George and Barbara, 92 and 91, met when they were just 16 and 15 years old. They were married five years later.

In 14 years, the couple had 6 children, and a few of them would go on to follow in their father’s footsteps and serve their country in political office.

In a tweet, Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Whillett offered the couple his congratulations and shared the following picture of them on their wedding day:

The Huffington Post reported that the couple was the longest married in presidential history.

It seems as if their love kept strong throughout the 72 years. The Huffington Post mentioned a 1994 love letter in which George wrote to Barbara: “I was very happy on that day in 1945, but I’m even happier today. You give me joy that few men know. I’ve climbed perhaps the highest mountain in the world, but even that cannot hold a candle to being Barbara’s husband.”

The couple is not only an inspiration to families in the political sphere, but also the rest of America. According to the American Psychological Association, about 90 percent of Americans get married, and 40 to 50 percent of those marriages end in divorce.

George and Barbara are living proof that long, loving marriages are a possibility. Happy 72nd wedding anniversary, and here’s to many more.
