Unfortunately for Facebook, one of the organizations they chose was Snopes, whose founders are currently deeply embattled against one another in court.
David and Barbara Mikkelson, now divorced, founded the company together in 1995. They divorced in 2015, and now Barbara Mikkelson claims that David embezzled $98,000 from the company’s bank account to spend on prostitutes and himself, according to the Daily Mail.
Not only has that allegation been made, but David Mikkelson has since remarried, to Elyssa Young, who has also been known as Eryn O’Bryn, a professional escort and porn actress — seemingly collaborating Barbara Mikkelson’s claim.
Young has also reportedly been hired by Snopes as an administrator and the two married in November, although the Daily Mail noted, “her escort websites and Twitter accounts still appear to be active. It is unclear if she is still working as one.”
Sounds like the résumé of a fact-checker to us.
That does not reflect too terribly well on Facebook’s judgment. According to The Daily Caller, Snopes “almost exclusively employs leftists as fact-checkers, many of whom have exhibited a clear distaste for Republican voters.”
In most circles, the crusade against “Fake News” is little more than a thinly veiled attack on conservative news sites and political blogs like Conservative Tribune.
Although Snopes is no “lie factory,” the clear left bias of the corporation certainly makes them an unfit arbitrator.
