In July, Gen. David Petraeus and retired astronaut Mark Kelly announced they would forming a new group that set out to “protect” veterans.

However, many people would take umbrage with such a group, as it pushed for the national adoption of universal background checks for those seeking to purchase firearms.

The group, called “Veterans Coalition for Common Sense,” sought to reduced the suicide rate among veterans and police officers by placing a temporary restriction on gun ownership for any person in imminent danger of harm or self-harm, according to The Hill.

Putting it plainly, the group “will urge lawmakers to pass legislation precluding any subject of an FBI investigation to purchase a gun,” a spokesman told Star and Stripes.

Breitbart pointed out that Kelly launched the group by mentioning military members and their commitment to “protect our Constitution and homeland.”

“As service members, each of us swore an oath to protect our Constitution and the homeland,” Kelly said in a statement, according to The Hill. “Now we’re asking our leaders to do more to protect our rights and save lives.”

Others who joined the group include former CIA director Michael Hayden and retired Adm. Thad Allen.

This group claims to be interested in reducing the suicide rate among our veterans. However, it also uses rhetoric that is dangerously close to that of gun-control advocates, which should make everyone a little nervous. Its leaders seek to control gun ownership without due process — all you have to do is become the subject of an investigation — and your constitutional right to gun ownership would be stripped away.

The guise of helping veterans appears to be the only difference between this group and other gun control organizations, and that could end up being harmful to many veterans — not to mention the Second Amendment.

Which constitutional rights would follow? Free speech? Religion? Assembly?

This issue is very much worth our attention as President-elect Donald Trump works to select members of his cabinet, with Petraeus reportedly being under consideration for secretary of state.
