The Democrats have sworn they would do anything in their power to stop Obamacare from being repealed, and that assumedly includes the filibuster in the Senate. So, one can only imagine the furniture being thrown inside Charles Schumer’s office when the Democrat Senate leader found out a repeal of Obama’s signature legislation was being attached to a bill that could not be filibustered.
Politico reported that Senate leaders had hoped that the bare-bones budget would be up for a vote by the end of this week, but that schedule now seems unlikely. It will be brought to the floor of the Senate by next week after amendments are voted on.
The problem with that, from a Democrat standpoint, is that budget resolutions are treated differently than other bills when it comes to Senate rules. The budget will also include budget reconciliation instructions, a procedural tool that allows a budget to be voted upon with a simple majority. This would make it filibuster-proof and allow it to pass to the House of Representatives with relative ease.
One imagines that the Obama administration is furious, but what did they expect?
We’ve seen how well Obamacare has “worked,” especially when it comes to access to health care and the cost of premiums. And while liberals sometimes lament that it’s gotten so expensive, they’ve done nothing to fix it.
The Affordable Care Act has become anything but affordable, and its infrastructure enforces low patient choice when it comes to plans or doctors. It’s time for it to go — and if the left isn’t willing to get out of the way in order to find a new solution, the budget proposal is the perfect mechanism to do it by.
If Obama and the left decide to complain, perhaps we can remind them of how they used the “nuclear option.”
This is the bill that Obama’s critics have been waiting for years to see. We can only hope that the Republicans in Congress and the new administration don’t let us down.
