The liberal media went into a frenzy on Jan. 26 with headlines about a “mass resignation” of senior-level State Department officials who had “quit,” and even suggested that their departure was “coordinated” as a stand against President Donald Trump.
However, it turned out not to be a “mass” exodus at all. Instead it was four management officials — and they didn’t exactly leave on their own.
The truth was that the Trump administration, as part of an effort to clean house, informed these officials that their services were no longer needed, according to CNN.
The four departing State Department employees were Assistant Secretary of State for Administration Joyce Anne Barr, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Michele Bond, Ambassador Gentry O. Smith of the Office of Foreign Missions and Undersecretary for Management Patrick Kennedy.
Per tradition, these officials submitted letters of resignation at the beginning of Trump’s term, as their positions are filled by presidential appointment.
A new administration usually retains senior-level officials for at least a few months until their successors have been confirmed by the Senate, but in this case the White House reportedly accepted the four resignation letters immediately.
“Any implication that these four people quit is wrong,” one senior State Department official said. “These people are loyal to the secretary, the president and to the State Department. There is just not any attempt here to dis the president. People are not quitting and running away in disgust. This is the White House cleaning house.”
Although the quick departure of the four officials left a gap in the State Department’s management team, the American Foreign Service Association has indicated that finding their replacements won’t be difficult for incoming Secretary of State Rex Tillerson upon his congressional confirmation.
“The skills that are needed for these positions are exceedingly rare outside the Foreign Service. Given the talent available in our diplomatic corps, we expect that the new secretary will have no trouble finding the right people at State to fill out his senior leadership team,” the group said in a statement.
Trump promised voters that he would “drain the swamp” when he got into the White House, and it appears that he hasn’t wasted any time fulfilling that promise.
The liberal media have been obsessed lately with reporting fake news, but the truth is that Trump is doing what he said he would do, and honestly it was likely much-needed, particularly in the State Department, where scandal and cover-ups have been a dime a dozen during the last eight years.
