It had long been surmised that former President Barack Obama would not stay out of the political spotlight for very long after exiting the White House, and according to recent comments from his former Attorney General Eric Holder, it seemed his period of post-presidency vacationing was about to draw to a close.
While in Washington, D.C., to take part in a meeting of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, a group Holder was specifically requested to chair by Obama, the former top lawman told reporters that the ex-president would soon become more involved in fundraising and interacting with state-level lawmakers, according to Politico.
“It’s coming. He’s coming. And he’s ready to roll,” Holder said of Obama’s imminent political return, adding that, at least in terms of the redistricting process, Obama “will be a more visible part of the effort.”
Fox News reported that the group headed by Holder was focused on rebuilding and growing the Democrat Party at the state level, with an eye toward gaining as much legislative control as possible ahead of the congressional redistricting that occurs after every 10-year census. The political party in charge obviously enjoys an advantage in the redrawing of the district maps.
Aside from attempting to win as many state-level elections as possible, Holder’s group will also push for state ballot initiatives that would demand the formation of nonpartisan commissions to redraw the districts while filing legal challenges against the already-existing district maps.
The U.K. Daily Mail reminded readers that Democrats suffered tremendous losses at the federal, state and local level over the course of Obama’s administration.
Obama will be largely welcomed with open arms by a party in utter disarray, despite his prominent role in its decimation, mostly because his activism and community organizing skills will be sorely needed to rally the despondent base.
The former president should be well-rested after spending roughly the past month on vacation, and will be flush with cash as well, having reportedly just signed a lucrative deal for the publication of his memoirs and those of former first lady Michelle Obama.
We always knew that Obama wouldn’t be going away entirely after leaving the White House, as he has a stained and tattered legacy to try to defend as much as possible from the administration of President Donald Trump.
