EPIC: Presidents Often Sworn in on Family Bibles… But Trump’s Using President Lincoln’s!

Presidents Often Sworn in on Family Bibles But Trumps Using President Lincolns

As Donald J. Trump is sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America on Friday, he will be taking the oath of office on a Bible owned by the 16th — and arguably greatest — president.

According to NPR, Trump will solemnly swear to faithfully execute the office of president on a Bible that belonged to Abraham Lincoln, the man who shepherded America through the Civil War and signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

So much for Trump being a racist.

“In his first inaugural address, President Lincoln appealed to the ‘better angels of our nature,’” Presidential Inauguration Committee Chairman Tom Barrack said, according to Breitbart. “As he takes the same oath of office 156 years later, President-elect Trump is humbled to place his hand on Bibles that hold special meaning both to his family and to our country.”

The New York Daily News reported that Trump will also take the oath of office on a family Bible, given to him by his mother back in 1955 upon his graduation from Sunday Church Primary School at his Queens Presbyterian church.

The Lincoln Bible is owned by the Library of Congress and was also used to swear in Barack Obama in 2009. Only Lincoln and Obama have used the Bible to take the oath of office for the presidency — surprising, given Lincoln’s status in America’s firmament of commanders in chief.

NPR also reported that Mike Pence’s choice in Bibles was actually just as epic. The vice president-elect will be using the Bible that Ronald Reagan used at both of his inaugural ceremonies as president and his inauguration as governor of California.

The family Bible is a common trope in presidential inaugurations, and Trump seems content to keep that tradition.

However, taking the oath on Lincoln’s Bible in addition to his family’s book is an epic — and auspicious — start to his administration.
