While it is generally a given that Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will win the popular vote in the left-coast state of Washington, it now looks like she may not get every single one of that state’s 12 electoral votes.
According to The Associated Press, one Democrat elector in Washington state has adamantly declared that he will not cast his electoral vote for Clinton no matter what, as he views her as a “criminal” who doesn’t care about the people in his state, particularly those of Native American descent.
“She will not get my vote, period,” declared Robert Satiacum in a phone interview with AP. “She doesn’t care about my land or my air or my fire or my water.”
Satiacum, a member of the Puyallup Tribe, supported independent socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders during the primary, and feels that Clinton has “done nothing but flip back and forth” on issues that are important to him.
The Electoral College meets on Dec. 19 to cast votes for president, with whoever reaches 270 votes being declared the winner. In all but two states — Maine and Nebraska — whichever candidate won the popular vote garners all of that state’s electoral votes, or is supposed to, anyway.
While the Electoral College voters are not necessarily required by the Constitution or federal law to vote for the particular candidate their state’s voters have chosen, some states have implemented their own punishments for “faithless electors” who go against the will of the state’s voters.
Should Satiacum refuse to cast his electoral vote for Clinton — assuming she wins Washington state’s popular vote — he stands to face a $1,000 fine, but that hasn’t dissuaded him from taking a stand, one he hopes will serve as encouragement to other electors in other states to do the same thing in refusing to cast their votes for Clinton.
“This is a time we all need to stand up and speak out,” he said.
Judging by records from the National Archives, it appears as though nearly 99 percent of electors throughout our nation’s history have cast votes for their parties’ candidates in accordance with their states’ popular votes. Of those handful who have dissented throughout the years, none have had an effect on the overall election results.
