A photo of a dog in a Texas Lowe’s has been making rounds across the internet, and when you find out why, you’ll want to share it, too.
The photo was of Charlotte, a 10-year-old golden retriever trained to help her companion, Clay Luthy, should he fall.
Luthy, a disabled U.S. Air Force veteran, and Charlotte, were two of the most recent hires at Lowe’s in Abilene.
Luthy has undergone five knee surgeries and can’t bend his left knee at all — and that’s where Charlotte comes in. She’s there to help should he fall. She even wears a vest fashioned from an old Lowe’s work vest.
Jay Fellers, human resources manager, said the pair was the best fit for the job. “We went through the interview process and Clay and his own merit won the job. And we knew he was gonna make a great employee — we just got the benefit of getting Charlotte right along with him,” Fellers told KIDY.
Luthy said he was looking for a job where he and Charlotte would fit in, and his wife suggested Lowe’s, since he spent so much time there anyway.
It turned out to be a good decision — for everybody.
“Everyone loves Charlotte,” the veteran told the Abilene Reporter-News.
An added benefit of hiring Charlotte is how she can entertain children. If a child is unhappy, Charlotte comes to the rescue. She calms the child just by being a dog, the Reporter-News reported.
Store policy welcomes service dogs. Customers who bring dogs on a leash or carry them are also welcome. The chain also works to give veterans jobs and help them whenever possible.
It seemed fitting that Luthy and Charlotte ended up there.
What an incredible story. Lowe’s took a chance on Luthy and Charlotte, and it’s beginning to look like it was the best decision they could have made.
