Libertarian Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and traditional conservative Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas are not the two most similar men on the Republican benches in the Senate. However, both offered similar words of praise after President Donald Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to replace deceased Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.
“The qualifications of Judge Gorsuch are beyond dispute,” Trump said during his Tuesday announcement of Judge Gorsuch’s nomination, according to Fox News. “He is a man of our country and a man our country really needs badly to ensure the rule of law and the rule of justice.”
Gorsuch, a 49-year-old judge with the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, is known as a strict constitutionalist. That definitely had an appeal for Sen. Paul, who announced his support of the pick on his Facebook page.
“I congratulate President Trump for nominating a conservative jurist with outstanding credentials and experience to the Supreme Court,” Paul wrote. “Judge Gorsuch is a worthy successor to Justice Scalia, a committed originalist, a strong defender of religious liberty and states’ rights, and a bulwark against the administrative state. I look forward to working with my colleagues for a speedy confirmation and to having another justice who will defend the Constitution.”
Sen. Cruz, meanwhile, had a message for Democrats already planning to block Gorsuch’s nomination.
“A decade ago, Judge Gorsuch was nominated to the Court of Appeals, and he was confirmed by voice vote, which means not a single Democrat spoke up in opposition to him,” Cruz said on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show Tuesday night.
“The question I would ask Senate Democrats now is, what’s changed? What’s changed? A decade ago you were willing to confirm him to the Court of Appeals and the only thing that’s changed is he has a decade of an exemplary record.”
As different as Cruz and Paul are, they’re two of the most influential conservative voices in the Senate. When they can both not only agree on a nominee but lavish him with considerable praise, you have to believe that Trump did something right.
